As a part of Game Developers Conference 2025 (GDC), Discord revealed to the general public its latest offering: Discord Social SDK.

What is Discord Social SDK?

It's a free offering created by Discord that allows game developers to add real-time social media to their in-game experiences – with Discord as the driving force of course.

“For game creators from indie to AAA, Discord is where you can connect with the world's largest and most engaged community of players to fuel the growth of your game before, during, and after launch.," said Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Discord Co-Founder and CTO.

In other words, all your games are about to get a much larger audience (if you want).

How does it work?

Add it to your game and then players can use Discord to chat with their in-game friends and teammates, share their experiences, and chat with Discord users even if they themselves do not have a Discord account.

The software is compatible with programming languages C++, which includes Unreal Engine and Unity, and is compatible with Windows 11+ and macOS. Future frameworks will include mobile and console capability as well.

But what about my data though?

Discord says data is available to game developers on a need-to-see for moderation purposes only and will follow the standard terms & conditions outlined for general Discord users – which essentially says you give them permission to post your content within Discord channels and store your information in their cloud.

This service will help level the playing field for indie studios which don't have the budget or team to develop social mechanics for their games.
