There will no longer be an entry level version of the Steam Deck.
Valve announced it will not produce anymore LCD 256 GB models. So, what is currently in the market, is it. This entry level handheld gaming device was priced around $399 – comparable to getting a Switch OLED. The next version up of the Steam Deck has 512 GB, and OLED display, and starts at $549.
Valve is simultaneously ramping up production on new products: the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Steam Controller.
While some have speculated that streamlining production is the cause, I believe the true culprit is AI and the shortage it is causing. Due to Artificial Intelligence driving a NAND flash shortage, we are seeing more and more consumer facing electronics be scaled back, and lots of speculation that the subscription economy is coming for consumer electronics in the near future.
And when I see near future, I mean near.
Sony is currently pushing its Flex Program which would allow you to rent a PS5 for about $13.50/month in the UK.
